Health and Fitness Volunteers

SHP’s Opportunities Programme supports hundreds of people with complex support needs including substance use, mental health and offending behaviour to engage in activities which could make real and lasting change to their lives. The over-55 social club is a great example of this - a sports programme which works with clients to have fun and make new friends whilst supporting them to be more active, increasing both their health and happiness.

A volunteer for the project can work just two hours a week in a fitness teacher or support teacher role (such as swimming, yoga, tai chi, dance, singing, self defence or taking clients on walking tours of London to name but a few activities) with a minimum commitment of one year.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience of teaching or support teaching a get fit class and/or a qualification in that area
  • Has the desire to help vulnerable people.
  • Has an understanding of the positive aspects of staying active and remaining healthy
  • Can instil an element of fun into the lives of people with very challenging life stories
  • Can commit to volunteering for a year after one taster session if they like the experience.

Supervisor: Opportunties Progamme Manager

Location: SHP services across London.

Hours: Flexible - Minimum two hours a week

Interviews: On a rolling basis

Benefits: Travel and lunch expenses within reason.

Garden Upkeep Volunteer

Our gardens need regular maintenance and care to facilitate ongoing benefits to SHP clients. Your role is to use your skills as a gardener to help keep the gardens pleasant, tidy and accessible spaces for our clients to spent time.

This will involve a variety of activities, such as weeding, watering, pruning, and other garden activities as agreed with the Gardening Project Coordinator and hostel staff. There may also be opportunities for occasional larger scale works as part of our ‘micro-farm’ programme.

This role is independent of organised garden sessions with clients, although you are likely to meet clients when you are on site. However, you are not responsible for their engagement with the garden.
