Health and Fitness Volunteers

Our Sport and Health Project aims to transform the health and wellbeing of homeless and vulnerable people through sport and physical activity. The initiative is designed to get people more active, in order to prolong lives, improve mental and physical health and reduce isolation.

This includes working with clients to have fun and make new friends whilst supporting them to be more active, increasing both their health and happiness.

A volunteer for the project can work just two hours a week in a fitness teacher or support teacher role (such as swimming, yoga, tai chi, dance, singing, self-defence or taking clients on walking tours of London to name but a few activities) with a minimum commitment of six months.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience of teaching or support teaching a get fit class and/or a qualification in that area
  • Has the desire to help homeless and socially-excluded Londoners
  • Has an understanding of the positive aspects of staying active and remaining healthy
  • Can instil an element of fun into the lives of people with very challenging life stories
  • Can commit to volunteering for a year after one taster session if they like the experience.

Greenhouse Project Session Support volunteer

The purpose of the role is to support gardening session leaders to deliver inclusive gardening workshops alongside SHP clients. All sessions are supervised by at least one member of SHP staff.

Sessions typically run on weekdays and last between 2 and 3 hours. This includes a range of tasks such as watering, weeding, seed sowing, some heavy-duty physical activities (such as digging, lawn mowing), harvesting produce. You will be supporting participants with a range of knowledge and abilities to carry out these activities

You will be working alongside SHP clients who may have a range of support needs such as drug or alcohol dependence or use, mental health needs, access needs, learning disabilities and physical disabilities, and language barriers. Your role is to facilitate their engagement and enjoyment of the garden space.
