If you are in an emergency housing situation and are about to be made homeless, or are already homeless, then you should contact the Shelter emergency line on 0808 800 4444.

Your next step should be to contact your local Homeless Person's Unit. Use Shelter's Emergency Housing Advice before you go or contact the advice line to make sure you understand what the council's obligations are.

To see how to contact your local council regarding homelessness support you can use this Postcode Checker.

Single Homeless Project services

Most of our services are only open to referrals from local councils. Use this Postcode Checker from Shelter to find out how contact your council’s homeless team.

Counselling in East London - We offer a free counselling service to people living and/or working in the London boroughs of Waltham Forest, Hackney, Newham and Redbridge. To find out more about our East London Counselling Service based in Leyton, click here.

Community based services - If you live in Redbridge, Westminster or Islington, we do accept self-referrals for our community-based services only (not for our hostels). To be eligible for this, you must:

  • Live in your own home (social housing or private rented accommodation)
  • Be single without dependent children living with them
  • Be at risk of homelessness
  • Be in need of ongoing support to maintain independence

Our community-based services can help you to stay in your home by providing advice and support on a range of things like claiming benefits, dealing with rent arrears, attending hospital appointments and accessing education, training and employment.
