SHP highlights futility of gang conflict

31 August 2010

SHP is taking part in the Boy Soldiers art exhibition this week, drawing attention to the increasing number of young people involved in urban conflict.

Fine artist Schoony created 30 casts of a boy clutching a grenade, each of which is being uniquely customised by leading artists such as Goldie, Matt Small and Carrie Reichardt.

SHP's contribution is in the style of a Grand Theft Auto character, produced by artist Jimmy South in collaboration with clients at our art projects. The Play Station game stands as an exaggerated representation of how life on the streets is about being armed and impulsive.

SHP Arts Development Manager Mark Bracegirdle said: “Young people the world over are involved in urban gang conflict. It’s our hope that we can raise questions about how we are tackling this issue."

Caleb Oluwafemi, a client of SHP's Kick Start service, said: "Being involved in conflict turns into your life when you hit 18 and up. When you start fending for yourself, you realise you’re no longer doing it for a joke, but to stay alive.”This show will take centre stage at the Blackall Studios on Leonard Street. It opens to the public on 3 and 4 September.

There is a second viewing at Graffik London from 6-12September.
