The Hobo and the Hound

Martin and his dog Sky spent five years sleeping rough on the streets on London. In a blog, Martin tells us how he could not bear to be parted from Sky despite the privations of sleeping on the streets. “We had tried a few homeless shelters but when you’ve got a dog it’s hard to find somewhere.”

Now they are both safely living in SHP’s Ashley Road project, one of the very few places which accepts dogs. “I couldn’t believe it when they said yes,” says Martin on learning he no longer had to live on the streets. “I had tears in my eyes.”

It was a happy ending for Martin and Sky, who are now both safe and well. “Finding a home at Ashley Road has made a huge difference to my wellbeing. If I hadn’t got in somewhere I probably would have ended up dead through heroin addiction after 25 years of injecting. But now I’m back on track.”

Read more about Martin’s experiences in his own words on SHP’s client blog, Unheard Holler.

You can make a difference to more people like Martin by donating to SHP. “Everyone needs a home, even with pets. At the end of the day, they could be saving someone’s life,” says Martin.
