Islington Generic Floating Support
Islington Generic Floating Support provides housing-related support to help people manage their accommodation and live independently and inclusively in the community.
The service is specifically aimed to provide assistance to vulnerable people in need of help to sustain stable tenancies and home-owner agreements.
Islington Generic Floating Support Service Aims
As part of its overall aim of supporting clients to maintain their tenancies and live independently and inclusively in the community, the service aims to:
- Assist clients to access and sustain education, training and employment opportunities
- Facilitate access to appropriate specialist services, such as drug treatment or mental health services
- Stabilise and reduce risky and harmful behaviour
- Ensure that clients have access to primary healthcare services
- Develop clients practical living skills
Islington Generic Floating Support Referral Criteria
This service is for:
- People who are 18 or over (a young persons service is available for 16-17 year olds)
- Home-owners or tenants in Islington, or being housed by Islington Council and placed out of the Borough
- People who are vulnerable with at least one identified support need. This is to ensure the project can meet the needs of the potential client.
The service can support clients with the following support needs:
- Physical/sensory disability
- Frail / elderly
- HIV/AIDS
- Mental Ill Health
- Offender/ at risk of offending
- At risk/subject to domestic violence
- Learning disability
- Substance use
- Housing related support but requiring further assessment to identify specific needs.
Statutory or voluntary agencies in Islington can make referrals to the service, or tenants can refer themselves by telephone or email.

Islington Generic Floating Support Service Delivery
The service is delivered through:
- Flexible, one-to-one support: Following the initial assessment, an allocated worker visits with them to address their individual tenancy issues. The frequency of visits is determined by the person’s needs and circumstances
- Ongoing Support: The service will provide support tailored to each individual with regular visits and contact from a floating support worker. Visits will be weekly, fortnightly or monthly according to the needs of each individual and can take place at home or in the community.
- Assessment and Reviews: Each case is subject to regular reviews by the allocated worker and client. These reviews can also involve the service manager as and when required. Clients can also request a review at any time.

Once a referral has been received and the applicant has been contacted, an initial assessment will be conducted to determine their needs by an Initial Assessment Officer or a Floating Support Worker.
Once the assessment has taken place a service will be provided to those applicants who meet the criteria. If the criteria of support is not met applicants will be sign posted or assisted to apply to other services. Once support is offered applicants will be given a named contact in the Floating Support Service and provided with support around their individual needs.
Support provided may include help and advice on:
- Resettlement support
- Applying for welfare benefits and community care and charitable grants
- Dealing with rent arrears and/or debt
- Arranging repairs or aids and adaptations
- Practical living skills including setting up gas and electricity supplies
- Anti-social behaviour
- Support with re-offending, substance use and mental ill-health issues
- Accessing care and counseling services
- Developing skills and training to obtain work
- Assistance in contacting other agencies including GPs, Social Services, the Probation Service and voluntary agencies
