Hackney Floating Support
The service provides housing-related support to help people manage their accommodation and live independently and inclusively in the community.
Hackney Floating Support Service Aims
The service is specifically aimed to provide assistance to vulnerable people in need of help to sustain stable tenancies and home-owner agreements. The service also aims to:
- Assist clients to access and sustain education, training and employment opportunities
- Facilitate access to appropriate specialist services, such as drug treatment or mental health services
- Stabilise and reduce risky and harmful behaviour
- Ensure that clients have access to primary healthcare services
- Develop clients practical living skills
Hackney Floating Support Referral Criteria
This service is for:
- People who are 16 - 54
- People residing in Homerton, Queensbridge and De Beauvoir & Shoreditch areas,
- People who are vulnerable and have at least one of the support needs that the service can meet.
The service can meet the following support needs:
- Physical / sensory disability
- Older person / frail elderly
- Young person at risk / care leaver
- HIV / AIDS
- Mental ill health
- Offender / at risk of offending
- At risk / subject to domestic violence
- Learning disability
- Teenage parent
- Substance use
- Housing related support but in need of further assessment to identify specific needs.
Self-referrals can be made by telephone. Referrals by agencies can be made by completing an application form available from SHP.
It is advisable that you contact the service prior to making a referral in order to ensure the service is suitable. We are always happy to discuss any potential referrals and indicate whether we can offer a service or suggest alternatives.
Hackney Floating Support Service Delivery
The service is delivered through:
- One to one support: in any areas where support is needed, delivered in the clients home or at the premises of referring or other agencies and at our own offices. The number of hours each client receives each week will vary according to their need, but will probably be more intensive at the start of the service and during any arising crises.
- Crises resolution: quick interventions to alleviate immediate and urgent needs such as homelessness, multiple debt, benefits out of payment.
- Advisory sessions: in relation to external agencies
- Support as long as required: (to a maximum of 2 years) and reviewed on a case by case basis.

The service is specifically aimed to provide assistance to vulnerable people in need of help to sustain stable tenancies and home-owner agreements.
If the applicant agrees that they can be helped by the service, they will be assessed by our primary assessment officer or a support worker to determine their needs. Following the initial assessment, an allocated worker visits with them to address their individual tenancy issues.
Support provided may include help and advice on:
- Resettlement support
- Applying for welfare benefits and community care and charitable grants
- Dealing with rent arrears and/or debt
- Arranging repairs or aids and adaptations
- Practical living skills including setting up gas and electricity supplies
- Anti-social behaviour
- Support with re-offending, substance use and mental ill-health issues
- Accessing care and counseling services
- Developing skills and training to obtain work
- Assistance in contacting other agencies including GPs, Social Services, the Probation Service and voluntary agencies
Each case is subject to regular reviews by the allocated worker and client. These reviews can also involve the service manager as and when required. Clients can also request a review at any time.
