Peer Mentors needed to support clients with complex needs

28 March 2017

SHP’s Fulfilling Lives in Islington and Camden (FLIC) team – who support Islington and Camden residents with multiple and complex needs – are recruiting for a team of Peer Mentors.

The Peer Mentors will volunteer alongside FLIC’s Link Workers to support clients to establish positive social relationships and reduce social isolation. The ultimate aim will be to help clients to begin to live independently, reduce the use of substances, improve wellbeing, and access relevant training or employment.

Peer Mentors must have direct personal experience of one or more of the four areas FLIC works with (homelessness, mental health, substance misuse and offending). Peers will be quite stable in their recovery, free from illegal substances for at least six months, and they should not have any pending court cases.

Each Peer Mentor will attend a nine day AQA accredited course – beginning on Friday 21 April   – and will be matched with one or two FLIC clients. The Mentor will represent an inspirational figure of recovery and will support their Mentee to consider opportunities for change and to access relevant services.

The role will involve developing a relationship of trust that will be both therapeutic and enjoyable, where Mentors and Mentees will spend time in the community, for instance with cinema outings, museum visits and mutually agreed recreational activities.

Peer Mentors will have monthly individual and group supervision and will be supported in the creation of a Personal Development Plan, with the ultimate aim of accessing employment opportunities. They will also have access to a personal budget to support them with achieving the goals set out in their Development Plan.

If you've got the experience we're looking for, please contact Elena Trivelli on etrivelli@shp.org.uk for more information and an application form. The deadline for applications is Friday 14 April. After the application form is received, applicants will be invited to an informal interview.
