The race - Sunday 12 July 2009, 9.35am
Last year 26,000 runners got their trainers on for charity and collectively raised over one million pounds in sponsorship. This year the Asics British 10K London Run returns with a new route that takes runners around even more of London’s beautiful and historic centre and follows much the same course as international champions will run in the 2012 London Olympic Marathon!
Anyone can run, so whether you’re a fitness fanatic or a charity fun-runner, we’d like you to sign up to support SHP.
Anyone running for us will receive our full support with training tips, guidance on how to raise sponsorship online, an SHP vest to race in and a bottle of bubbly waiting at the finish line!
We have 12 guaranteed places, so join the team soon! Or sign up individually to support SHP at www.thebritish10klondon.co.uk.
10K’s new race route
Starting at Hyde Park Corner, the new part of the race route will now include passing under Big Ben and continuing around the south side of Parliament Square before entering Victoria Street and heading towards Victoria Station. At Buckingham Gate the route incorporates a 'U' turn to head back to Parliament Square with the stunning view of Westminster Abbey with Big Ben and the London Eye as backdrops.
The race route will then re-enter Parliament Square, passing the new statue of Nelson Mandela and the new Supreme Court of GB building before turning left into Parliament Street and Whitehall with a straight 400m run to the finish line.
Running for SHP
Aside from sponsorship, running as part of the SHP team is completely free. A typical sponsorship pledge is in the region of £250 - £500 per runner, with a minimum target of £100. In return for your support, we’ll provide you with:
- A stylish SHP running vest so we can cheer you on from the sidelines
- Training and Nutrition tips to help you prepare
- Help with online sponsorship
- Champagne as you victoriously cross the finish line!
You can set up your own sponsorship page on line at www.justgiving.com
What your money will go towards
SHP wants to ensure that all our clients have the support they need to develop greater confidence and raise their self-esteem. This means delivering services in addition to our core accommodation and support schemes, to help clients develop as individuals and groups.
Over the past year, for example, we have been providing opportunities for clients to express themselves through art. We currently run two major projects, Transformations and the London Arts Project.
These projects comprise workshops with professional artists, able to enthuse newcomers as well as those who have been creating art for years. The workshops encourage clients to explore their own creativity and produce something remarkable together.
We are working towards securing a permanent home for the London Arts Project, which would enable us to run in-house workshops and exhibitions all year round, transforming our capacity to engage with clients.
In order to sustain these projects, SHP has to raise extra funds, in addition to those used to deliver core services. Every penny raised through the British 10K will help to secure the projects’ long-term future.
